Hollis hosts walkthrough at NOMA

Dr. Sara Hollis, Director of the Museum Studies program, hosted a walkthrough on July 15th at the “Ancestors of the Congo Square: African Art” exhibition in the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). The “Ancestors of the Congo Square” was a special exhibition highlighting the many fine works from Africa as well as the connection between New Orleans and Africa. More than 100 attendees heard Dr. Hollis’s presentation, including museum directors, curators, college professors, artists, school teachers, students, and friends of NOMA.
The exhibit was held from May 13th to July 17th, and attracted significant media attention and positive reviews. A series of lectures were given in relation to this special show, and Dr. Hollis’s discussion was the concluding presentation about the exhibition. At the walkthrough, Dr. Hollis discussed the style, theme, and ritual and political function/significance of the many quality masks, vessels, costumes and statues.
Dr. Hollis was applauded for her insightful and informative analysis of the African art in NOMA. Dr. Yu Jiang, another Museum Studies faculty member, was introduced; and could possibly conduct similar presentations in the future at NOMA.
